Domestic violence is a community issue and our whole community needs to be involved to make lasting change – men and women. Father’s Day is a wonderful opportunity to engage men of all ages in unlearning misogynist cultural norms.
In his article from The Shriver Report, Dr. Jackson Katz, a leading voice in the dialogue around men’s roles and responsibilities, advocates for men’s involvement in domestic violence prevention through interrupting misogyny and violence in daily experiences. He holds that we can work towards a future in which masculinity is not defined by power over others, and in fact, a world free of gender-based oppression benefits people of all genders. He reflects that these sometimes challenging conversations on masculinity are a necessity for any parent if we wish to stop the cycle of domestic abuse. SHALVA understands that to make that vision a reality, we need everyone in our community to pitch in to address this pervasive issue.
We are excited to have Jackson Katz, PhD, as one of our speakers for the 2024 Luncheon entitled “The Stories We Tell: Domestic Violence in Entertainment and News Media Culture.” We hope you will join us to hear Jackson Katz’s and CarolAnn Peterson’s thought-provoking messages on June 25th.
