Is This for Me?

If you have or think you may have experienced domestic abuse, SHALVA is here for you.

SHALVA’s counseling services are available to anyone age 18 or older in the Chicago area who self-identifies as female and Jewish and who is or has been a victim of domestic abuse by their spouse or intimate partner.

What to Expect

When You Call

Your call to our 24/7 hotline, 773-583-HOPE(4673), will be answered by one of our trained domestic violence specialists. You can be anonymous, and any information you give is confidential. The specialist will do an “intake” where they will ask you about your situation and safety needs. Then, we’ll set you up for your first visit to SHALVA.

We’re Your Safe Space

Our counseling services are free and confidential, and there are no wait lists. For safety purposes, our office location is unlisted. Incoming calls to and from SHALVA have no caller ID. We will help you assess your safety needs and create a safety plan if needed. Also, we will not confirm or deny that anyone is a client if someone asks.

At SHALVA, we understand that every decision about “what to do” is a process. We believe that you are the expert on your own life and respect your right to go at your own pace.

Your First Visit

You’ll meet with one of our master’s level therapists in a safe, confidential, and welcoming setting. Your therapist will ask you about your situation and needs and, if necessary, create a safety plan with you. Together, you and your therapist will set short- and long-term goals. You will receive educational materials and (if needed) referrals for additional support services.

Therapy Sessions

Our therapeutic approach is specially designed to address your unique religious and cultural needs as a Jewish woman. You will learn skills and strategies to help you navigate your situation. Our therapists will provide you with education, guidance, and support to feel  empowered to make decisions that are right for you. They’ll help you explore your past, present, and future to help you heal. Individual and group sessions are available to suit your needs and comfort level.

Ongoing Support

SHALVA’s support does not stop at the therapist’s office. We provide our current clients with legal information and support, financial assistance and interest free loans, case management, and referrals for additional resources. You can count on SHALVA to help you develop a holistic plan for healing.
