Taking off the masks of women who hide the pain of domestic abuse was the focus of this year’s annual luncheon at the Standard Club on Wednesday, June 21st. A record high number of 410 guests attended the luncheon. Earlier in the day, 125 guests viewed a private screening of The Mask You Live In, Jennifer Siebel Newsom’s documentary that follows boys and men as they struggle to resist society’s self-destructive ideas of masculinity.
Guest speaker, Professor Michael Kaufman, the co-founder of the White Ribbon Campaign, further highlighted the connection between gender expectations for men and domestic abuse. Kaufman urged men and women to foster positive ideals of manhood as a way of fighting domestic violence.
“The event was a fantastic show of support for SHALVA’s mission” said event chairs Dr. Emmet Hirsch and Dr. Naomi Senser. They expressed gratitude to SHALVA’S generous donors and sponsors whose support enables ongoing services, the expansion and innovations of new services, and educational programs for young Jewish men and women about the nature of healthy relationships. “The well-being of Jewish women victims of domestic abuse is in good hands.”
If you were not able to attend the screening, the film is available on many streaming services or for purchase at www.therepresentationproject.org. If you are interested in hosting a screening of the film with a SHALVA educator, please contact the SHALVA office at [email protected].
