Prevention

At SHALVA, we believe that there are two components of our work that are critical to helping end the cycle of domestic abuse:

  • Counseling and supportive services for survivors who are currently experiencing or healing from an abusive relationship and prevention education for the Jewish community and beyond.

A prevention education program can be a wake-up call for someone in an abusive relationship, or it can plant the seed in their awareness for the future. It can help parents and friends think about how to approach someone they are worried about. It can promote healthy love. We know that the more we talk about relationships – healthy, unhealthy and abusive, the safer our community will be.

SHALVA offers tailored education programs and conversations for all types of audiences that help bring to light a topic that is so often difficult to discuss. Current programs include:

  • Healthy, Unhealthy, Abusive – What’s the Difference: dive into the nuance between these three types of relationships.
  • How to Help a Friend: Understand best practices in speaking with a friend or loved one who you suspect may be experiencing abuse.
  • Talking to Your Kids About Relationships: Learn how you can have conversations about relationships with children of any age. The earlier parents can discuss healthy relationship behaviors, the better!
  • Healthy Conflict: Conflict is inevitable, healthy and productive conflict is not. Learn our tools for engaging in healthy conflict with people in your life.
  • Understanding Domestic Abuse in the Jewish Community: Dive into the unique experiences of Jewish domestic abuse survivors, what spiritual abuse is, and more.
  • Media Talks: Examples of domestic abuse are all around us. Use a book, movie, television show, or podcast to host a conversation about domestic abuse and relationships.
  • Seven Circles: A self-guided healthy relationship program for young couples looking to deepen their connection with intention.
