The path to safety and freedom is difficult and long for survivors of domestic abuse, full of twists and turns. At SHALVA, we join them on their journeys to offer guidance and supportive services for any challenges, unfairness, and isolation they encounter.

Featuring Stephanie Land

Stephanie Land’s bestseller Maid: Hard Work, Low Pay, and a Mother’s Will to Survive, recounts her harrowing saga as a single mom navigating bureaucratic obstacles while living below the poverty line. At age 28, Land’s dreams were shattered when she and her seven-month-old fled a violent home and moved into a homeless shelter, having no other options. Her story highlights how domestic violence, untenable minimum wages, high housing costs, lack of childcare and inadequate government assistance programs leave people like her without any form of a reliable safety net. Land’s memoir inspired the Netflix original series Maid, one of Netflix’s most watched limited series ever.
